OPWHL Hosts Summer “Try-It” Event at Lansdowne Park – August 23

The Ottawa Power Wheelchair Hockey League (OPWHL) is excited to announce a special “Try-It” event on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 1–3 PM at the Lansdowne Park basketball courts (next to the Aberdeen Pavilion).

This free community event is designed to introduce more people to the fast-paced, exciting, and inclusive sport of power wheelchair hockey.

Who’s Invited:
The event is open to anyone who uses a power wheelchair, as well as their families, friends, and community members interested in learning more about adaptive sports. Current OPWHL athletes are also encouraged to attend, making this a great opportunity for the league to gather during the summer months.

What to Expect:

• Try out real OPWHL hockey equipment

• Meet league players, volunteers, and community members

• Learn about the rules, season structure, and competitive opportunities

• Special guest appearance by Big Joe, mascot of the Ottawa REDBLACKS 

Accessibility:
The OPWHL is committed to providing a fully accessible experience:

• Accessible washrooms will be available at the Aberdeen Pavilion

• An on-site attendant will be present for extra support as needed

For individuals who use power wheelchairs, opportunities to participate in team sports can be limited. The OPWHL provides a space for athletes to compete, build friendships, and celebrate their abilities. Events like this are crucial for expanding awareness, welcoming new players, and strengthening the adaptive sports community in Ottawa.
